What is Banting?
This successful low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LCHF) diet was named after William Banting, who was the first person to try it.

Professor Tim Noakes made this a popular diet, which basically switches your body from burning carbs for energy, to burning fat. Unlike the Atkins Diet, the focus is on increasing fat and decreasing carbs, with a moderate protein intake.
As long as you eat the right types of fats (mostly animal fats) and minimal carbs, you will be able to eat until you feel full. However, common sense should always prevail and you should avoid over-eating! Stick to no more than 80g of meat with any meal.
is the correct ratio of fats, vegetable and proteins?
Rule of thumb is 50/50 meat and veg. Fat should be included. Fat suppresses your appetite, and you will soon realise whether you are eating enough by how soon after a meal you become hungry. If after breakfast you are hungry before lunchtime, you will need to increase your fat intake at breakfast time. Although it takes a bit of getting used to, ideally you should not need to eat more than twice a day.
How do I know what I can and can’t eat?
There are three lists that you can follow. The green list items contain less than 5% carbs per serving. The orange list contains less than 25g of carbs per serving and the red list is a NO NO list.

Is alcohol allowed?
Whilst following a Banting diet, alcohol is not encouraged. Low-carb drinks contain empty kilojoules and will probably slow down your weight loss. Realistically speaking however, you will probably indulge from time to time and you really just need to be smart about your choices.
Spirits (vodka, rum, gin, tequila, whiskey, Scotch, brandy and cognac) are generally carb-free, and dry wines and bubbly are okay. Just be choosy about your mixers – remember, no sugar!
Can eating dairy slow down your weight loss?
Some people are more sensitive to dairy than others. If you hit a plateau in your weight loss, try cutting it out and you should start losing weight again.

4 large eggs
Can of Chakalaka Mild & Spicy Chakalaka
500g Gluten-Free Self-raising flour
Grated cheese (Cheddar & Parmesan)
- Preheat oven to 180 C with oven shelf in the centre of the oven, grease a medium size loaf pan.
- Using a hand whisk, beat eggs together in a mixing bowl until fluffy.
- Stir in the Chakalaka, Turmeric, garlic flakes, cheese and lastly the flour, stirring with a wooden spoon until ingredients are just combined.
- Pour ingredients into the pan and bake for 35 minutes in preheated oven.
Tips & hints: Enjoy on the day of baking with some fresh fruits and cheese.
