We all know somebody who is currently Banting, has tried Banting or is thinking about Banting. One year on and 60kgs lighter, Lizette Martins shares her Banting weight loss story with us.
After marrying the love of her life, and childhood sweetheart, she fell pregnant in 1996 with twins. ‘It was quite a difficult pregnancy with lots of hormone treatment and steroids. Those sent my weight through the roof.’ Three years after the birth of her twins, Lizette fell pregnant again. Her weight had not stabilised in that time. Lizette tried numerous weight loss programmes.
‘They all worked, but the minute I stopped, I gained weight – and more – all back again.’
The turning point
‘I will never forget Mother’s Day 2015. It was a turning point in my life,’ she says. ‘I took some pictures on the day with my family and for once they weren’t edited before I looked at them. I looked and for the first time SAW myself! What a shock.’ Lizette knew she had to do something.
‘I don’t believe in coincidence. The next week my colleagues started a Google search on the Banting Diet as they were interested in the diet. They offered me a copy of the eating plan.’ Lizette read the The Real Meal Revolution by Prof Tim Noakes and realized that was something she could do! ‘It was a big mind shift – a drastic change in me that I had to do.’
Realising the task ahead of her she knew she could not, or did not want to, achieve her goal alone. ‘I needed help! The ratios of what to eat was something I knew I needed help with as the banting lifestyle is NOT eat as much fat as you can!’
Lizette saw an advert on Facebook from
SLENDER SLIM 4U (WITPOORTJIE)
and it was there that she received the support she would need for this journey. ‘So my journey with Banting began… July 2015! Liesl and Fransie, from Slender Slim 4U, guided, assisted, answered questions and motivated me from day one.’
It’s a lifestyle choice
Lizette believes the reason that Banting worked for her was because it suited her lifestyle. ‘ I have always enjoyed rich food and love vegetables. I could easily quit sugar and carbs (breads and pastas) because to me there were other ‘nice to haves’.
I love meat but realized that I don’t have to cut off the fat of the meat to still enjoy my meal. I also realized that Banting is not a high protein diet – a mistake so many people make when starting up.’ Lizette says, quite simply, she realised she had no choice. She had to make the change to save her life. ‘It was a mind shift, a prayerful cry for help, and it worked.’
Green is for go…
Possibly the greatest change Lizette had to make to her current eating plan was to NOT just grab a sandwich or a piece of bread when she was hungry, NOT to eat chips when she was bored, and definitely NOT to not just eat for the sake of eating.
“I had to learn how to only eat when I was actually hungry, and when my body needed fuel.’
Once she had made the decision to go this route, she made sure she committed to it fully. She only ate foods from the Banting green list* for ten months straight.
* Banting consists of different food broken down into different lists. Foods on the green list can be eaten daily, while foods on the orange need to be eaten sparingly and those on the red list are to be avoided.

Changing your entire eating lifestyle is no easy task and Lizette said one of the most practical things that worked for her was to plan weekly what groceries to buy to make sure that she had the right food in her fridge.
‘I also started having breakfast and enjoying it. An added benefit was that my manner of shopping changed… for my whole family. I can honestly say that I am not obsessed with food any longer.’
Family makes the world go round
She believes her family was, and still is, her saving grace. ‘Honestly, I have the BEST husband ever. When I told him that I wanted to give Banting a try, he supported me fully. He offered to make me breakfast every morning, and to this day, one year later, still does.’ Lizette says her children realized that mom meant business and ate what she ate.
The benefit of this was that her 18 year old son lost a phenomenal 37kg in the process. ‘I am so proud of him.’ Communication is key and Lizette knew she had to be open and honest with her family, friends and colleagues.
‘I needed them to know so that they could support and help me – And they did! Rudi, her husand, will often come home with a new Banting recipe, or a new product he saw on the shelf when shopping, or even make her a meal that he saw and thought she would like. ‘If it wasn’t for that kind of support, I wouldn’t have made it this far.’ Lizette believes that people are kind if you give them a gap.
From a social point of view, her honest and open approach proved successful as friends would always consider her when catering.
Lizette says her Banting lifestyle is still a great conversation point. She believes this is because of the dramatic change in such a short space of time.
‘So many people, strangers and friends, always ask for help on where to start. I am always honest with them… I tell them simply, I can’t do it for you – you need to get your head in the game… start today. I am amazed that the first thing that people wanted to know from me was what they can eat as a ‘cheat’ or do I give myself cheat days! NO! Don’t ever think fat again!’
