Banting guru Dr Tim Noakes chats to John Maytham about the low carb high-fat diet that has become so popular.

Maytham asked him if the criticism of the Banting lifestyle creates any doubt in his mind.

Noakes insists that the evidence is clear and if one is insulin resistant this diet will reverse Type 2 diabetes.

He acknowledges that the emphasis may have been incorrect. It is not about eating as much as you like.

It is about eating to hunger.

10% of people put on weight on this diet, he adds.

Those are the ones who need to restrict how much fat they take.

He says he hopes in the new Banting Pocket Guide they have the emphasis and balance right.

Noakes now appears to be a lot more anti-alcohol.

As an adult you must make up your own mind about alcohol, but we know people who lose the most weight are the one’s who stop drinking.

He also seems to have changed his tune about snacking, which was part of the original diet plan. Too much snacking is now a no-no he says.

Be careful what you snack on. We would rather people ate bigger meals and snacked less.

He says lots of the snacks being sold as Banting friendly contain sweeteners of some kind, and to really get your weight down you have to get rid of the taste for sweet foods.

But he remains firmly behind the diet and its long-term benefits.

We treat the most sick people and reverse their metabolic syndrome.

We are just telling people to go back and eat the foods eaten in the 1960s where we didn’t have diabetes and obesity…food we have been eating for 2 million years.

Obesity and diabetes kicked in during the 1980s when people changed that diet he says.
